November is National Entrepreneurship Month, a month dedicated to celebrating courageous people that take smart risks to start their own businesses. Here at JustFab, we have a dynamic duo of entrepreneurs that started Urban Botanicals, a creative LA-based floral design company. Read on to learn about their business, how it all got started, and more!
Let’s take it back! How did you two meet and how did the idea of Urban Botanicals come to life?
We met all the way back in high school! The idea of UB came upon us way later into our friendship. We have always wanted to start a business together and we have brainstormed so many fun ideas. Floral design became the frontrunner after realizing one of our mutual hobbies could actually be a great business idea, and our passion for event planning made it the obvious decision.
What are each of your roles in the business?
Well, we are both equal co-owners in true BFF fashion! Staci is the creative marketing and PR guru, our CMO, and Niki is the financial and excel savvy one, the CFO. Luckily, our backgrounds are diverse and help us equally cover all of the fields in our business. We equally design all of the unique aesthetics of our floral arrangements.
What do you love most about Urban Botanicals and having your own business?
It’s awesome that we have the freedom to do what we want, when we want, and how we want! Who doesn’t want to be their own boss? We have the creative freedom to go in any direction our heart desires, and we love it.
What was the first thing you did to kick start Urban Botanicals?
We took a huge trip to the LA flower mart and opened an Instagram account in a day- literally! We then compiled all of our favorite flowers and started making arrangements to post to our Instagram page and start putting the word out there.
What has been your biggest struggle in launching the brand and your service?
Finding the time to balance our passion with our full-time careers, family, significant others, and friends. It gets tough!
How much time do you each put into Urban Botanicals?
We are consistently brainstorming, networking, and arranging! It’s a huge part of our lives.
What’s your best advice for someone who wants to start their own business?
Do your research and have fun with it! It’s beneficial to know what you’re getting into prior to starting something but it’s more important to have fun with it every step of the way – even in the difficult times!
For both of you, what’s your personal favorite combination of flowers?
We LOVE anemones, garden roses, kale, ranunculus, peonies and dahlias. Add some explosion grass (our fave filler!), queen anne’s lace, blue thistle, or astilbe and we’re in bloom heaven.
