10 Chic Ways To Be Sun Smart This Summer

3rd Jul 2014 / By Guest Contributor

The days are heating up and visions of pool parties, bonfires, and barbecues are dancing through our heads, which can only mean one thing: summer is officially in full swing! Though July might be more famous for Independence Day and summer vacays, it’s also National UV Safety Month.

UV, or ultraviolet, radiation is a form of energy produced by the sun. So while summer might bring to mind the phrase “fun in the sun,” be aware that those same UV rays are actually the main cause of skin cancer. Yikes! Don’t go running indoors yet, though, instead here are 10 chic ways you can be sun smart this summer:

  1. Sport big sunglasses: An everyday essential for many (including yours truly), find a trendy oversized pair with UVA and UVB protection that you can wear all summer long.
  2. Set up some shade: A portable umbrella can be a lifesaver – literally! Try to find one with sun-blocking materials, and keep yourself protected from picnic to poolside.
  3. Avoid tanning: Yes, it’s summer, and yes, a little bit of sun is good for you, but you shouldn’t exceed 30 minutes of direct sun per day unless you want to increase your risk of skin cancer and wrinkles! If you need a little more color, try a sunless self-tanner. Though take it from me, being pale isn’t a bad thing!
  4. Find a fab floppy hat: The floppy hat trend is all the rage for seemingly any occasion this season, but what’s more perfect than a big floppy hat with a teeny tiny bikini?
  5. Wear sunscreen: This should be a no-brainer, but many people don’t apply sunscreen as they should. Treat yourself to a dermatologist-approved brand and apply 1 ounce (2 tablespoons) of SPF 15+ sunscreen to your entire body 20 minutes before going outside, and reapply every two hours.
  6. Rock a rash guard: Fashion-forward rash guards are a huge trend this summer. Find your favorite style and keep it on for some extra protection.
  7. Cue the caftan: Caftans, coverups, and sarongs are the perfect way to look hot without getting toasted. Opt for a light, long-sleeved maxi style for maximum coverage.
  8. Mind the time: The sun’s peak hours are between 10 am and 4 pm, so be aware when you’re outside and plan your sun protection accordingly.
  9. Make the most of your makeup: Practically every kind of makeup can be found with some kind of SPF. Pick a few summer appropriate faves (BB cream and lip balm, anyone?) and be sure to reapply throughout the day.
  10. Wear your SPF: Yep, that’s right, not just clothes or SPF, but clothes with SPF. Though they’re still relatively new to the fashion realm, more companies are starting to offer styles with built-in sun protection.

See, being sun smart can actually be pretty chic (and easy!). What’s your favorite way to look chic in the sun? Do you practice any of these sun-safe tips?
