Happy National Donut Day! I’ve already started celebrating with a Winchell’s dozen! Donuts are one of my favorite things – a fact that is well-known around the JustFab office. And while I have my preferences (Boston Cream or Sprinkled Cake, please!), there is an endless variety from which to choose. Step into my bakery as I breakdown the Top Ten donuts to dine on today.
Growing up, donuts were a Saturday morning treat. My dad would pick up a dozen from Winchell’s Donut House, and they’d be ready and waiting when I woke up. Of course, I wasn’t allowed to indulge in my strawberry frosted donut until I’d had my cereal (aka something ‘healthy’) first, but that never stopped me from trying!
1. Boston Cream
Chocolate frosted with a vanilla custard filling, this donut is like a mini Boston Cream Pie. I love it!
2. Sprinkled Cake
Whether they’re rainbow, chocolate or holiday-themed, you can’t go wrong with a smattering of sprinkles on a frosted cake donut.
A classic. Don’t underestimate the power of a truly amazing glazed donut. It’s like a piece of heaven.
4. Long John
No, I don’t mean the winter underwear. This bar-shaped beauty usually comes with a chocolate or maple icing. Delish!
Raspberry, strawberry or lemon filled and topped with powdered or granular sugar, lots of people love this donut. But it’s not really my jam.
6. Old Fashioned
A cake donut that appears smushed, this delectable delicacy has a crunchy outside and a soft inside.
7. Powdered Cake
If frosted isn’t your forte, then opt for this simple style. The dusting of powdered sugar is sweet, but not cavity-inducing.
8. French (aka Cruller)
Fried dough with a twist, this handmade foreign confection can be topped with powdered sugar or icing.
9. Donut Holes
They may be small (and adorable), but these bite-size bits are packed with flavor. And yes, they are made from the dough previously in the center of traditional ring donuts (or made to look like they are).
10. Frosted Coconut
These guys a get a bad rap. Often the last lonely donut left in the box, people only eat it when there’s nothing else left. I say, embrace the coconut and eat it first!
So which donut will you be dining on today? Do you have a favorite donut shop?
