The quirky, off-beat color combo of black and white has always had a special place in my heart…a little bit androgynous, a lot of Tim Burton, and always über chic.
My fascination with the stark contrast started when I was a little girl, looking through my mother’s Rudi Gernreich book…those bathing suits, those white lids with black liquid liner, that mod, mod look!
While vintage will always reign queen, black and white has never felt more new. Flats like those from the talented Tabitha Simmons or Céline bring tomboy chic to any outfit – pair with a little ankle-length jean. I’m a dress-wearer myself, so I pair my cutout black boots with white socks – adds a little depth, dimension, and a DIY feel to my look. Personally, I think this binary color combo feels most fresh with an element of surprise: shoes with a thick lug sole, or a fat Velcro strap.
To keep from feeling like a uniform, I suggest avoiding an entirely black and white ensemble — go for brights, go for the bold, and don’t forget to have fun with pattern, too!
