The 1970s was an amazing decade! The assertion of women’s rights in that era was directly reflected in the fashions of the time. Yves Saint Laurent’s introduction of Le Smoking subverted the idea of what we gals ‘should’ wear — and in that era, of Gloria Steinem’s glorious activism – we started sporting denim and slacks, tossing those prim, restricting dresses to the wayside. They called it the “Feel Good” decade for more than one reason, folks!
It goes without saying that I’m obsessed with the accessories of the 70s – a headband is my style staple – and I love that fashion’s trending towards a 1970s revival right now. Platform shoes and suede boots look amazing with a little dress – sling a woven satchel across your body, and you’re good to go. I also love all things patchwork, adore a jean jacket with rips and frays – the key is to keep your whole look unfussy, a little undone. The 1970s revival is all about ease and comfort; we’ll see this trend continue into Spring / Summer 2014, with retro-inspired wooden sandals and shoes made of woven fabrics. Bring it on, man.
