In fashion, we often find that the truly great trends tend to repeat themselves every few years. This season, it’s happening to one of my all-time favorites… the pointy toe shoe! When I think of this silhouette, I am reminded of the Hollywood greats of the 1950s and ’60s. Fabulous ladies, like Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly… women who oozed class and grace from every pore of their beings. This season, we are seeing this classic silhouette, plus a few ‘bells and whistles’ to make it fresh and on-trend for all of your summer looks. From bold colors and ankle straps to toe-caps and even booties, the pointy toe shoe has definitely been given a bit of a makeover for 2013. In an attempt to make it easier for you to incorporate this trend into your wardrobes, I thought I might share a few of my favorite ways to wear this silhouette.
Over the past few decades, fashion has made it a point to make casual dressing more and more accepted. Long gone are the days of matching shoes to handbags and wearing panty hose with everything. We are no longer expected to wear a skirt suit and pill box hat just to go to the market. As lovely as that is, I think some have taken this new-found freedom a bit too far. I think the key to casual dressing is to always make it look pulled together with at least one item.
Imagine two girls both in boyfriend jeans and a great vintage T-shirt. Now imagine one of them pairing this look with flip-flops and the other with pointy toe pumps and a structured blazer. Do I need to ask which one looks more chic and pulled together? And that, my friends, is the beauty of the pointy toe pump… for some reason, it works with just about everything!
Now, I am sure that there are some of you out there who think of the pointy toe pump is a bit safe or possibly even boring. But this season, it’s not just about basic black and nude. We are seeing great bold colors, prints, and even metallic tones that make this classic shape even more fun to play with. Try pairing a bold colored pair with your favorite printed skirt and striped nautical-inspired T-shirt. Summer is the time to play with bold colors and mixed prints… go wild and enjoy yourself! One of the beautiful things about working with a classic shape is that you can have more fun with colors and patterns.
When it comes to ankle straps and booties, it is important to make sure they hit your leg/ankle at the right spot! Now, if you’re feeling confident with your ‘cankles’ (or lack thereof), try pairing a simple ankle strap with a full midi skirt and some sort of bustier or (if you have the bod) a matching crop top. Booties can look amazing when paired with a fitted mini dress… they add a little bit of coverage so your exposed legs don’t feel quite so naked.
If you’re unsure about those pesky ‘cankles’ (it happens to the best of us), it’s better to pair these styles with pants. Try wearing your booties with skinny dark or black denim. Ankle straps tend to look super chic when paired with cropped denim or cigarette pants.
I hope this helps you embrace this oldie but goodie back into your hearts (and closets)!
XOXO,
Nina
