Anchors Aweigh! Find The Nautical Look That’s Right For You

Nothing says summer more than sailing the ocean blue. And although not all of us are fortunate enough to be docking our sailboats in Cape Cod this summer, we can all enjoy incorporating the classic nautical trend into our wardrobes. The nautical trend has always been one of my favorites. Although it isn’t exactly a ‘new’ trend, it is certainly a very prominent one this summer. From boatneck striped tops to high-waisted shorts to espadrilles and even nautical-inspired jewelry, there is definitely a way for everyone to incorporate some element of this trend into their wardrobe.

With July 4th celebrations right around the corner, it couldn’t feel like a better time to start busting out a few red, white and blue nautical looks. Try pairing a pair of slim cut cropped navy blue cigarette pants or high-waisted shorts, a boatneck 3/4 sleeve striped T-shirt and a red pair of wedge espadrilles (for a pop of color). I like JustFab’s Malibu.

If that feels a bit too ‘sailor’ for you, you could always try a crisp white button-down with denim cutoff shorts and add nautical elements with a striped pair of wedges (like Lane) and possibly an anchor necklace (like Steer The Course). I also love the idea of a little red tank dress with a striped navy and white blazer, straw Panama hat and navy wedges (try Kerry).

The great thing about this trend is that you can use it as much or as little as you want. That being said, I would encourage you to limit your stripes to one article per look (no striped blazer, T-shirt and shoes all at the same time). And if you end up going for a top or a dress emblazoned with a large anchor, then I would save the anchor necklace for another look.

Now, I know that traditionally speaking, when you think of nautical, you think red, white and blue, but there are other neutrals that work well with this palette to keep your outfit from looking too much like an American flag. Try adding a camel-colored bag (my favorite is Architect) or a straw hat to break up the color trio. I also love the use of chunky gold jewelry, and of course, what summer outfit would be complete without a great pair of sunglasses?! Try adding a pair of tortoise-colored RayBan Wayfarer glasses for a classic Kennedy-esque look. Or pick up JustFab’s Waikiki.

I hope this helps add a little something extra to your summer looks… happy sailing!

XOXO,

Nina
