Get Caught In A Dark Romance – With Style

10th Dec 2012 / By Guest Contributor

The word ‘romantic’ often brings up images of pale pink ruffles or delicate white lace. What I love about this season’s version of the romantic trend is the darker vampire side that we don’t often get to embrace. It’s the perfect balance of soft and feminine with a bit of an edge. I love how sexy this trend can be without being overt or obvious. It’s more about the idea of what is underneath than what is actually showing.

The use of tulle and strategically placed ruffles and jacquard prints; mixing materials like lace and velvet; and adding delicate studs and stones with touches of metallic all play integral roles in achieving a killer dark and romantic look.

It’s important to think about the details when incorporating this trend into your wardrobe. Sometimes when you are working with a dark palette, you really need to focus on the small things to make your look stand out. Think about your fabric choices (velvet, tulle, lace, chiffon), embellishments (tassels, ruffles) and jewelry pieces (like cameo rings and necklaces). Of course, the occasional stud or spike never hurt anyone! Try pairing velvet pants and a ruffled chiffon blouse with a black lace bra with JustFab’s Morticia black and gold bootie and After Glow studded clutch.

I also think makeup is key! A great dark vampy lip can look absolutely gorgeous when applied perfectly. Make sure your lip color flatters your skin tone, and if it starts to feel a bit too Morticia Adams, then don’t be afraid of going with a lighter version in more of the red/berry family. At the end of the day, it’s more important that you look fabulous (instead of just trying to mimic the trend)!

I hope this helps you navigate the dark waters of one of the season’s hottest trends!
