June Ambrose is a Stylist to the Stars, author of Effortless Style, star of VH1’s Styled By June, Rock Mom, my fashion fairy godmother, Instagram Icon, oh the list goes on and on! Her amazing style takes my breath away, so I was pretty much beyond breathless after interviewing her at Essence magazine’s Best In Black Beauty Awards, an award show honoring the who’s who and creme de la creme of the brown girls beauty biz.
June sparkled and shined as the witty co-host of the beauty awards held at the Dream Hotel in NYC’s trendy meatpacking district. Remember the cool area Samantha moved to on an episode of Sex And The City? Yup, that’s the exact same cool and chic area where I hung out with June.
The uber-talented celebrity stylist has worked on the likes of megastars including Jay Z, Mariah Carey and Diddy, to name a few. We were thrilled to have a little red carpet #ShoeChat with June on achieving #EffortlessStyle and how to look stylish and comfy at the same time.
Me: Your book is called Effortless Style. Can you give FAB-shoenistas a tip on how to gain effortless style?
June: It’s important that they play! Think about when you were a child and you first discovered fashion. Think about the things that truly speak to your personality. Whether it’s that big bold necklace and you just wear T-shirts everyday. Take things out of context. And have fun with fashion. Without style, fashion is moot. Think outside the box!

June: Oh, yes, we love JustFab! Oh, I have shoe-gasms constantly! Multiple!
June: A woman asked me the other day in the store if a pair of studded Christian Louboutins were trendy. And I said: ‘Are you a rockstar?’ And she said: ‘Yes.’ I said, ‘Then you are not trendy. You’ll wear these over and over.’ Think about who you are and who you want to discover fashion and style.
Me: What is an amazing shoe style that you can recommend for a girl searching for her inner fabulosity?
June: A girl who has never worn heels should always try a platform pump. I’m a Rock Mom, and if you feel like, as a mom, you could never wear a stiletto, do a wedge heel. Wedges are the new sexy, because they are getting a little steeper. A ballet flat over a sneaker, please. They are definitely more Jackie O and Audrey Hepburn.
