Staycations: Fun on a Budget

18th May 2014 / By Fallon Swett

As the weather starts to heat up and with holiday weekends just around the corner, it’s only natural to start dreaming about your next fabulous vacation spot. However, for some of us jet-setting to another city is just not in the budget. Enter the staycation zone. With some advance planning and a little creativity a staycation can be fun, stress free, and inexpensive; proving that staying home doesn’t have to be dull. Here are a few fun ideas for a staycation on a budget.

At-home spa day: Give yourself a salon worthy mani-pedi, complete with a foot soak and exfoliation. Whip up DIY face masks and scrubs using ingredients straight from your kitchen cabinets. Don’t forget to add spa–like touches with cucumber water, scented candles and soft background music for a peaceful setting.

Explore the outdoors: Whether it’s a walk in the park, a stroll along the beach or a hike in the mountains, spending the day breathing in fresh air is sure to leave you refreshed and rejuvenated. Make a day of it by packing a picnic lunch for you and someone special.

Bake-a-thon: Round up the flour, sugar and eggs! Spend the day tackling a new recipe or some family favorites. Whether it is a fresh fruit pie or a new cupcake flavor, your loved ones will be sure to enjoy your efforts.

Game night potluck: Dust off your favorite board games and schedule a game night with friends. Have everyone bring over their favorite party snack to share. Enjoy an evening of a little friendly competition and some tasty treats!

Book binge: Pick up a couple books from your local used bookstore or download a few on your e-reader. Curl up on a blanket at a nearby park or beach and spend the day immersed in your favorite genre.

Get crafty: Break out the mason jars, chalk paint, and hot glue! Spend some time finally completing those DIY projects that you’ve had stored away on your Pinterest boards.

Movie Marathon: Spend the day watching your favorite movies or start a new TV series. Netflix and Redbox are both great low cost options. Pop some popcorn, dim the lights, and let the marathon begin!

Play tourist: View your city as a visitor might see it. Schedule a trip to a museum or visit a local attraction. You can also check out the event calendars for your city for upcoming fairs or festivals.

What are your favorite staycation activities?
