Pantone has announced its 2014 Color of the Year, and it’s Radiant Orchid! As we work our way into a new spring season, I have to say that this choice came as a bit of a surprise to me at first. After seeing all of the designers’ Spring ’14 runway collections last fall, Radiant Orchid was certainly not a hue that was wildly seen or used. We did, however, see tons of blush tones and pale pinks, white collars, sporty inspired articles, great metallics, and of course, what spring would be complete without a solid dose of florals? What I slowly started to realize, though, was what a fantastic color Radiant Orchid could be if used as an accent color with all of the fantastic spring trends coming our way.
Probably my favorite and most accessible way to work this shade into your spring looks would be with lipstick. Bold lipstick choices can really make or break and outfit, so it’s important to know when and where to use them. I absolutely love the idea of pairing a Radiant Orchid colored lipstick with so many of the beautiful pale pinks we saw all over the spring runways. I think wearing head to toe blue and pale pinks would look to-die-for with a bold Radiant Orchid lip!
I also love the idea of pairing this lip color with so many of the fantastic metallics we are about to see. I would, however, steer clear of anything in the copper family and focus on more golds and silvers for this lipstick shade.
Of course, as soon as you start talking lip color, nails are never far behind. I think this Radiant Orchid color would look fantastic on your hands and feet this spring. As with any bold color though, it’s important to stay on top of your manicures and pedicures… chipped nails are far from chic, especially in such a loud shade.
For those willing to take a bit more of a chance, I think Radiant Orchid could look absolutely stunning on your eyes. Try pairing a Radiant Orchid eye shadow with a great black liner. I would look for a shadow that lends itself more to the purple and less toward the pink tones of this orchid hue.
I would also stay away from matching your lipstick to your eye shadow. A little goes a long way with this shade. A nude lip would be a much better look.
I hope you are as excited as I am to start working this beautiful color into your beauty routine!
