The 2012 Summer Olympics are coming to a close in fabulous, fashionable London. And while every athlete aimed for gold, Americans and the British alike sported some fierce red, white and blue – on more than just their uniforms. For those of us who weren’t able to compete in the 30th Olympiad, here are my tips for achieving a patriotic manicure at home.
1. Always Start With Clean Nails
Use Zoya Remove Plus Nail Polish Remover. This 3-in-1 formula removes polish, preps the nails and conditions! It is the first step to a lasting manicure.
2. Pick Your Colors
I love using America from Zoya. This strong red provides a bright base to do some stand-out nail art. Paint a thin coat starting in the middle of the nail. Let it dry completely. Paint a thin second coat and let it dry completely before making your designs. Whether you want to make stars and stripes, Union Jacks, circles, rings or anything you can think of, you need to start with dry nails!
3. Be Creative!
There are so many great tools out there for creating your own nail art, like Orly Instant Artist Striper Polish. The super-thin brush makes it easy to paint lines, stripes and create freehand designs.
When I need to create a straight line on my celebrity clients, I usually use striping tape (which can be purchased at any beauty supply store). In a pinch, you can use Scotch tape, masking tape or the sticky side of a Post-It. There really is no wrong way to create nail art.
For beginners, I recommend starting with an accent nail (like Venus Williams), or try painting each nail a different color.
4. Always Finish With A Good Top Coat (Like Seche Vite) And Never Forget To Condition Your Cuticles
I recommend using Lalicious Body Oil in my favorite scent, Coconut Cream. Massage in a couple of drops for healthy, glowing skin.
Nail wrap companies have put out some amazing patriotic designs, as well. UK-based Rebel Nails has some amazing Union Jack styles, while Minx has all the flag art you can imagine!
And if your manicure has to last through trials, qualifications and finals, try using gel polish. This hybrid polish lasts for up to three weeks and comes in a ton of colors. Each coat is cured with UV light creating a hard, glossy finish that will not chip.
Don’t forget: get creative, experiment, have fun and show your true colors! Patriotism never looked so good!
